Obama’s Marriage Gap

We hear a lot in the media about the Republican problem with the gender gap.  However, there’s two sides to every demographic shift in the polls.  The truth is that Obama’s lead among women comes exclusively from running up huge margins with unmarried women.  When it comes to married voters, including women, Romney has a 15-point lead, according to Gallup.

In fact, marital status is such a consequential factor in voting patterns that is seems to supersede even religious status.

As you can see, “moderately religious” married voters are more likely to vote Republican than “highly religious” single voters.

For all the talk about the need for Romney to close the gender gap, he can easily win this election by running up large margins among white males and married women, especially with young voters projected to turn out in lower numbers than they did 4 years ago.
