Rep. Lynn Westmoreland Beclowns Himself

Over the past few weeks, we’ve been leading the charge demanding answers from the Steering Committee members as to why they purged conservatives from some key committees.  Politico decided to illicit some responses from individual members and staff, and came back with some interesting tidbits.  Here is what one member, Lynn Westmoreland, had to say:

Rep. Lynn Westmoreland, a conservative who is close to party leaders, told them that “the a—hole factor” came into play in the Steering decision.

“He said that it had nothing to do with their voting record, a scorecard, or their actions across the street [meaning fundraising],” Westmoreland spokeswoman Leslie Shedd told POLITICO. “It had to do with their inability to work with other members, which some people might refer to as the a—hole factor.”

Shedd said her boss didn’t intend to call anyone a name and acknowledged later to her that “perhaps he should have said obstinate factor instead and wanted me to reiterate that he did not and would not call another member of Congress an a—hole.”

Hmmm, so he has saying that they were not thrown off because of their views, but because of their supposed petulant behavior.  Well, I can’t remember the last time a member was thrown off a committee without a scandal, and simply because of their tough personality.  Moreover, even if you want to say that Reps. Amash and Huelskamp have been outspoken critics of leadership (which is actually a good thing), the same cannot be said of David Schweikert.  He is a low-key amiable type of guy who has been a team player and studious workhorse on the Financial Services Committee.  That’s why incoming chairman, Jeb Hensarling, stood up for him.  While Schweikert has always stood by his principles and voted his conscience, he has always been a team player and a pleasure to work with.
If there is an a-hole involved in this process, maybe Mr. Westmoreland ought to look in the mirror to root out the problem.
