Well, who better to give advice on winning than the man who lost to Obama by a wider margin than Romney?  Over the weekend, John McCain said that “We have to have a bigger tent. No doubt about it. And obviously we have to do immigration reform.”  He also said that we need to stop talking about abortion.  Umm…that is exactly what you did in 2008, Mr. McCain, and you lost.

We do need to have immigration reform, just not the type that the Democrats and progressives want. We need to massively streamline the immigration process, so that legal immigration doesn’t take longer than some people’s lifetimes, and so that there are enough guest worker visas to meet the demands of the various industries needing workers. The core of any immigration reform should be a 21st century version of the Bracero program (fixing the flaws in the mid-20th century version), and requiring any who wants a new Bracero visa to apply for it only in their county of origin (as well as any family visas). Anyone who is or was in this country illegally can get a new Bracero visa, but they have to wait 10 years before they can apply for a resident alien visa (effectively putting them at the back of the line for naturalization and citizenship).
